Broadcasters are employing a patchwork of digital radio solutions thro ughout Europe. A common method for digital transition and a business model for long-term success have yet to emerge and repeated calls for FM switch -off are not resulting in much action. One of the major hurdles is the div ergent economic drivers and political viewpoints of public and private bro adcasters. These differences -- combined with the difficulty in adapting e xisting regulations to conform to digital realities and the sheer number o f available technologies -- makes the prospect of a single digital radio s olution in Europe unlikely. Many private broadcasters are seeking a techni cal solution that offers a gradual transition to digital at a low cost.
