New Travel Information Standards for European Digital Radio Platforms
A press release from WorldDMB Forum indicates that new standards for the transmission of language independent multimodal traffic and travel information, developed by the Transport Protocol Experts Group (TPEG) are now being submitted by the Traveler Information Services Association (TISA) to ISO, the international standards setting body, for adoption.
The news is significant to European broadcasters who already carry such data via RDS on FM analog radio services, and who are looking ahead on how to migrate that data to digital radio services such as the Eureka 147 family (DAB, DAB+, DMB) and DRM standards.
At a DMB-sponsored workshop held for automakers earlier this month, broadcasters reportedly encouraged designers and executives to think creatively of the role digital radio platforms might play in traffic information and control systems. European carmakers and audio manufacturers are already collaborating on harmonizing digital receiver designs that will be compatible across borders and digital operating modes. Much of the focus has centered on digital radio technologies operating in VHF band III.
Bev Marks, a spokesman for TISA, announced that the TPEG specification developed by his organization will be made available to all WorldDMB forum members at a discounted rate at least 12 months before the technology comes on the market.
Jay Hackett, a representative from Land Rover/Jaguar, noted that that the automotive industry will require co-existence of existing RDS-TMC and Digital TMC/TPEG broadcasts in order to protect current vehicles on the road until the automotive industry catches up with the broadcasting industry during the current digital radio transition.
