iBiquity Touts HD Advantages in Europe

Ibiquity Digital held its fourth-annual HD Radio Forum Europe in Stuttgart in late February 2010 in an effort to win more continental converts to HD Radio technology. Despite the fact that many governments have already committed to Eureka 147-based technologies such as DAB (UK), DAB+ (Sweden, Hungary, Italy) and DMB (France) some EU countries such as Switzerland are taking a more laissez faire approach to digital, with five privately owned FM stations there now operating HD Radio digital hybrid signals.

Selling points iBiqiuty is pitching to EU broadcasters include:

  • A relatively large variety of OEM and after-market auto receivers already available at competitive price points
  • Multicast capability
  • Interactive services, such as iTunes tagging
  • Ancillary data and telematics services
  • Real-time traffic update services

More than 100 attendees reportedly participated in the forum. Among those presenting were Clear Channel, Elektrobit (EB), Fraunhofer-Institute (Journaline), Intertek, Navteq, NDS, NXP Semiconductors, European HD Radio Alliance, Siport, STMicroelectronics, Strategy Analytics and Texas Instruments.
