German Commercial Radio Taking More Interest in DAB+
Stuttgart - May 7, 2014 — The German state of Baden-Württemberg is effectively covered by three regional DAB+ networks on channel 11D. The major cities covered are Ulm, Stuttgart, Mannheim, Karlsruhe, and Freiburg. The public broadcaster SWR is leaving the 11D multiplex network though, and will be heard on their own network (channels 8D and 9D). For this reason, new channel space will soon be opened up.
Radio.NL is reporting that because the multiplex on channel 11D was not completely full, the regional media board LFK last year decided to allow three additional commercial radio stations to join it. However, with the impending departure of SWR, there is even more interest from commercial radio, and LFK is now planning on allowing nine new commercial stations (instead of three). This represents a stark contrast compared to November 2011 when the major stations had no interest in broadcasting on the DAB+ network.
