NPR Sheds Light on HD Radio Coverage 

The big news from CES for HD Radio was that a portable chipset was finally unveiled – at least for FM. This is one significant part of the HD Radio rollout that has been noticeably absent. Once implemented, it will provide a necessary element for HD Radio acceptance, putting a digital radio receiver in just about any portable device.

France Adopts DRM up to 30MHz 

On Dec. 5, French Minister of Culture Christine Albanel signed a decree to confirm the adoption of Digital Radio Mondiale (DRM) and Terrestrial Digital Multimedia Broadcasting (T-DMB) in Band III and in the L-band as the digital radio standards in France.

Performance evaluation 

With HD Radio, it's important to monitor and measure the time alignment and level alignment between the analog modulation and the MPS, and stations will likely want to monitor the RBDS on the analog channel along with PAD data for both the MPS and SPS. Fortunately, there are now multiple monitoring devices made specifically for HD Radio, and each of these devices gives the end user options about which parameters are to be measured, and how the device is to alert the user once a problem is detected.

ITU Approves DRM for Tropical Band 

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the United Nations organization for coordination of the use of the radio spectrum, has completed its four-year review and modification of the regulations for the use of the radio spectrum, including broadcasting use.

Continental Electronics Completes Phase 1 of Mississippi Project 

Continental Electronics has completed Phase 1 of a $1.48 million contract with Mississippi Public Broadcasting to install eight analog and HD transmission systems throughout the state of Mississippi.

Harris Helps Bring HD Radio Broadcasting to Thailand 

Fatima Broadcasting International of Thailand has begun multicasting using Harris HD Radio transmitters, becoming one of the first HD Radio broadcast services in the Asia-Pacific region.

Itunes Tagging: A New Hook for HD Radio 

The Sept. 14, 2007, changes to the IBOC rules included permission for stations to operate in extended hybrid mode. Doing so provides additional data capacity for stations, which can be used for additional multicast channels and other data purposes.
