Expansion of DAB+ in Germany Continues
Berlin - Apr 10, 2012 - As of the second quarter of 2012 there are more than 60 programs from ARD heard across Germany. Among them are 13 that can be heard throughout the entire nation via the DAB+ multiplex. In the provinces, other private and public stations are available via DAB+. As an example, in Halle/Saxony-Anhalt, 23 different programs are transmitted over the multiplex. The addition of 18 new transmitters, spread about the country, is planned during the summer 2012.
There are at least 140 different receivers available, ranging from small pocket-sized devices, to car stereos, portables, kitchen and clock radios. Smartphones with DAB+ are expected soon. There are devices that can receive DAB+ in addition to streams via the internet. "This year we expect sales of around one million receivers for digital radio," said Dr. Rainer Hecker, chairman of GFU - The Society for entertainment and communication electronics, Frankfurt.
