Broadcast Executive Calls for End to Analog FM in Germany
Cologne - Feb 8, 2014 - Willi Steul, director of Deutschlandfunk, Deutschlandradio Kultur and DRadio Wissen, is going on record and calling for the sunsetting of FM radio in Germany after a suitable transition period (10 years), according to Wirtschafts Woche.
"Instead of continuing to rely on technology from the radio Stone Age, we should finally make the switch to digital radio," said Steul. "A lot more can be transmitted over DAB+ than over VHF (FM) and it's cheaper."
Steul's group has about €12M budgeted this year for analog medium- and long-wave transmissions. "We could reach more people with DAB+, at a fraction of the cost," he went on. "This is the technology of the future."
