Quincy, IL - Jul 19, 2011 - Harris Broadcast Communications took part in a commemorative September 11 event in Quincy, IL, the weekend of July 16.

Led by Mayor John Spring, the City of Quincy specially applied to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey to obtain a steel artifact from the remains of the World Trade Center buildings. The Port Authority granted this request, and the City of Quincy displayed the artifact to the public on Sunday as part of an afternoon ceremony.

The artifact is a 15-foot long, 7,000-pound steel structure that was part of the antenna tower located on World Trade Center Building #1. This structure supported a television broadcasting antenna that was designed and manufactured by Harris at its Quincy facility, which is still home to Harris radio and TV transmission manufacturing operations.

A caravan of fire, police and emergency medical services vehicles escorted the steel artifact from the Quincy Regional Airport to Quincy City Hall at 8th and Maine Streets, before proceeding west on IL Route 104 (Broadway) from the airport to 52nd Street, turning south to Maine Street and then proceeding west on Maine Street to City Hall. The artifact remained on display into the early evening.

Plans are underway to permanently erect the artifact near the existing 9/11 Memorial located at the Quincy City Hall Plaza. There will be a dedication ceremony on Sept. 11, 2011, honoring all fire, police and emergency medical services personnel and the innocent lives lost one decade prior.
