RIAA Takes New Tact with Song Piracy
Washington - Dec 22, 2008 - For several years, the Recording Industry Association of America has filed lawsuits against individuals in an effort to thwart illegal file sharing. This effort has proven to be laborious and a PR nightmare for the organization as it pursues individuals for copyright infringement. While not giving up the fight entirely, the RIAA is going to try a different approach: work with Internet service providers to thwart the illegal activity.
According to several business publications, the RIAA has developed agreements with major ISPs to alert the provider that a user is uploading unauthorized content. The user gets three strikes, after which, the ISP will deliver the RIAA warning or directly ask the user to stop that activity. If the user continues he will receive continued warnings. The RIAA then wants the ISP to reduce the offender's Internet access data rate. If the user continues to persist, the RIAA wants the ISP to disable the user's Internet access.
Apparently a similar action has been considered in France by its Parliament.
Metro Traffic, Trafficland Partner on Video Traffic Information System
New York, NY - Dec 22, 2008 - Westwood One has entered into a multi-year partnership with Trafficland to combine Trafficland's 24/7 live traffic video systems of nearly 5,000 traffic cameras with the Metro Traffic team of traffic reporters. Metro Traffic also becomes the exclusive representative of Trafficland services to broadcasters. Westwood One has also negotiated the right to purchase all of the stock of Trafficland in 2009.
SCMS Buys Bradley Broadcast
Frederick, MD, and Pineville, NC - Dec 23, 2008 - The business and assets of Bradley Broadcast Sales are in the process of being acquired by SCMS. The two companies signed a purchase agreement on Dec. 19, and the deal is currently scheduled to close on Jan. 13, 2009. The terms and price were not disclosed.
For now, the two companies have in place an interim operating agreement whereby Bradley will continue to deal with its customers by telephone and e-mail, but the orders will actually be shipped and billed through SCMS. SCMS will purchase most of Bradley's inventory and also certain intangible assets such as trade names, phone numbers, and Internet addresses. Two Bradley sales people -- Art Reed and Bob Eburg -- will become a sales office for SCMS, and will continue to operate from the Frederick, MD area.
David Matthews, the managing member of Bradley said, "The recent troubles with the U.S. economy hit us like a sledgehammer. In late October our sales volume dropped considerably almost overnight, and our ability to borrow working capital was then significantly impaired. But beyond that, the real problem is the uncertainty as to when and if things might change for the better. After looking at all the options, I felt that the best thing for our customers, our suppliers, and our sales staff was to seek a buyer with the financial strength to ride through the recession. SCMS is that company."
Bradley Broadcast Sales had been planning for months to move into a new building as its existing lease was set to expire on Jan. 31, but Matthews decided instead that the safer move was to cancel those plans and sell the business.
Matthews also notes that customers can still call the Bradley phone numbers and get a Bradley salesperson on the phone. Orders will be shipped from and billed by SCMS. All new orders are being processed through SCMS.

HD Digital Radio Alliance Markets Through Down Economy
Orlando - Dec 22, 2008 - The HD Digital Radio Alliance is continuing to market aggressively to consumers in this down economy as it kicks off its Q1 ad campaign. The new flight of ads focuses on evolution and how HD Radio came to be. According to the campaign, HD Radio has evolved with new features (Itunes tagging), low price-points (as low as $79), extra stations (multicast), and no subscription fees.
The Alliance notes that with less advertising clutter, the message will be more easily heard. It runs from Dec. 29 through March 29.
Latimer Returns to Symetrix
Mountlake Terrace, WA - Dec 22, 2008 - Jim Latimer has returned to Symetrix to take on the duties of northern regional sales manager. He returns after a two-year stint away from Symetrix, which included time with speaker manufacturer Adam Audio.
"I'm back because I missed the company, the people, and the products," Latimer explained.
