DHS Seeks Input on IPAWS Support
Washington - Dec 15, 2008 - The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is seeking to define its future contracting approach for providing implementation support services for the Integrated Public Alert and Warning Program (IPAWS). In Executive Order 13407, titled Public Alert and Warning System, dated June 26, 2006, the DHS was directed to ensure that under all conditions the president of the United States can alert and warn the American people. FEMA is implementing projects to modernize and integrate the existing Emergency Alert System and National Alert and Warning System programs to provide a national-level all-hazards warning system. Collectively these systems will constitute the IPAWS program.
The intent of IPAWS is to utilize current national-level warning systems, support state, territory, tribal and local warning needs, and integrate new technologies, standards, partnerships, and policies to improve public warning over all media, to all people, at all times, in all situations. Planned projects to be implemented over the next five years include investments in communications infrastructure across the United States. Efforts to support these activities may require collection and analysis of information on legacy alert and warning systems, engineering and specialized technical services, acquisition of hardware and software, site design and construction, installation, testing, integration, delivery and operations and maintenance support. FEMA will use the information received through the request for information to define the appropriate contractual mechanism for acquisition of IPAWS implementation services.

FEMA is also interested in assessing level of interest within the industry for this future support services acquisition. Interested firms are invited to submit a statement of capability addressing their interest in serving as either a prime or subcontractor for this potential procurement.

Disc Makers Opens Houston Location
Pennsauken, NJ - Dec 18, 2008 - Independent CD and DVD manufacturer Disc Makers is opening a new store in Houston. The company's store, located between the Midtown and Montrose sections of Houston, is Disc Makers' first outpost in the Lone Star State. It is the 11th store Disc Makers has opened.
Disc Makers has offices in New York City, Los Angeles, Berkeley, Chicago, Seattle, Atlanta, Nashville, Puerto Rico, Boston and now Houston, with the company headquarters and manufacturing facility located in Pennsauken, NJ.
TC Electronic Ships Powercore 6000
Westlake Village, CA - Dec15, 2008 - TC Electronic is now shipping the Powercore 6000. The system combines System 6000 algorithms with the TC Electronic Powercore platform.
Powercore 6000 features eight Free Scale DSP engines, the same DSP used in System 6000, and it has an SRAM memory design that supports high-performance reverbs and delays. Powercore 6000 includes seven plug-in algorithms that are ported directly from System 6000: VSS3 Stereo Source Reverb, Nonlin2, DVR 2 Digital Vintage Reverb MD3 Stereo Mastering, Brickwall Limiter, Unwrap stereo to 5.1 conversion and Tap Factory.
Comrex Tests Access on 4G Network
Devens, MA - Dec 16, 2008 - Comrex has completed preliminary testing of the new Xohm Wimax network using its Access stereo BRIC IP codec. The testing was conducted in the greater Boston area with Xohm hardware supplied by Sprint Nextel.
Tom Hartnett, Technical Director of Comrex, comments, "For quite some time, we had been aware of the potential benefits that Wimax technology would offer for our customers. The promise of 2 to 4Mb/s download and 0.5 to 1.5Mb/s uploads in a mobile format would give Access users a great data platform for transmission of live broadcast content."
Hartnett has chronicled his Xohm testing in a report posted at http://remotes.comrex.com.
Xohm is currently available in Baltimore, MD, and will be available in other select US markets.
Transaudio Group Now Shipping Daking Mic-Pre One
Las Vegas, NV - Dec 17, 2008 - Transaudio Group, the worldwide distributor for Geoffrey Daking, is now shipping the Daking Mic-Pre One single-channel microphone/instrument preamplifier. Sharing the gain structure and Class A, fully-discrete transistor circuitry design of the Daking Mic-Pre IV, the Mic-Pre One additionally features a unique variable high-pass filter and ships in a freestanding DI-style steel enclosure.
Essentially a single channel of the Mic-Pre IV, the Mic-Pre One features switchable phase, 20dB mic input pad, and +48V phantom power, plus a selectable 1/4" line/hi-z instrument input, all utilizing relays with gold bi-furcated contacts. Two large knurled aluminum knobs control the variable high-pass filter (0-200Hz) and continuously variable input gain, which is complemented by a full-width, 20-segment bi-color LED meter. The rear of the unit offers a Jensen transformer-isolated mic input and fully-balanced XLR output, plus a 1/4-inch line output. A fourth connector introduces DC power from the external power supply to the unit.
Axia Certifies HP Switches for Axia Networks
Cleveland - Dec 17, 2008 - Axia IP-audio system users have additional choices in Ethernet switches that include models from Hewlett-Packard's Procurve family. Eight HP switches augment previously certified Cisco Catalyst models.
The certified Hewlett-Packard switches include five edge-switches from the Procurve 2610 family; two core switches, the Procurve 2900-24G and 2900-48G; and the Procurve 8212zl core switch.

Event Ships Opal Studio Monitor
Sydney, Australia - Dec 17 2008 - Event Electronics is now shipping the Opal studio monitor. The Event Opal is an eight-inch two-way studio monitor with a frequency response of 30Hz to 10kHz and a power handling of up to 1,000W.
A high-powered neodymium driver provides 36mm of linear excursion to the glass fiber polyamide cone. The ULD1 tweeter combines beryllium-copper with a neodymium driver. It is mounted in the Opal's high-frequency waveguide. The Opal cabinet is molded from aluminum.
Day Sequerra Ships M2A-FM Modulation Monitor
West Berlin, NJ - Dec 19, 2008 - Day Sequerra is now shipping the M2A-FM, an analog FM monitor with world-wide tuning and de-emphasis settings. The M2A-FM is based on the M2 HD Radio monitor and shares many of its features.
The FM modulation monitor demodulates audio level, carrier modulation level, pilot and SCA injection, incidental AM noise and RBDS coding and display. The on-board preselector is sensitive yet selective, requiring only 15dBf for SNR -30dB referenced to 100 percent modulation.
The unit is HD Radio Ready so it can upgraded for HD Radio use. Also available is the optional Ethernet remote control package that comes bundled with the company's Remote Dashboard software that provides 100-station scanning, remote control monitoring, logging and alarms with E-mail alarm notification.
Broadcast Electronics Appoints VP of Engineering
Quincy, IL - Dec 17, 2008 - Broadcast Electronics President and CEO Joseph W. Roark has appointed Brian Lindemann as vice president, engineering. Lindemann will oversee all RF engineering activity for BE. His career spans more than 20 years in communications for a number of companies, including Rockwell Collins and Honeywell. He holds six patents and specializes in waveform generation with an emphasis on hardware/software co-design. Lindemann is a Six Sigma Black Belt.
BE has also hired Rick Dorfner and Josh Timmons as software development engineers. Each has complementary skills in embedded operating systems and integrated circuitry design, with Dorfner's background in network communications and Timmons' background in time-critical software applications.
