Well-known Tower Climber Dies in Fall
Pittsburgh - Sep 25, 2007 - Marking the ninth fatality this year of workers falling from communications structures, 51-year-old Dan Plants fell to his death Sept. 24 while dismantling a WGBN 1150 AM tower in East Deer Township. The tower had been damaged by a spring storm. Plants, a resident of West Virginia was frequently called to work on towers in the Pittsburgh area. He was working alone on this tower.
His body was discovered by a young girl walking her dog and was pronounced dead at the scene at 4:10 p.m. He was wearing a safety harness. Neighbors said he was seen using a torch to dismantle the tower around 2 p.m.
Firefighters examined the tower, but OSHA inspectors are doing the actual investigation of the fatality.
Plants' widow and sons need help paying for the funeral. The Daniel Plants Memorial Fund has been established. Donations can be sent to WesBanco, 1 Bank Plaza, Wheeling, WV 26003.
