RAJAR 4Q2012: UK Digital Radio Listening on the Increase Again
London - Jan 31, 2013 - RAJAR has released its radio audience measurement results for 4Q2012, and they show that fully one-third of radio listening throughout the U.K. is now attributable to digital sources.
In total, 25.2 million people now listen to radio via a digital platform each week, up 9 percent year over year from 23.1 million in 4Q2011. Weekly digital reach is now 48.2 percent of UK adults, or 53.6 percent of radio listeners.
DAB maintains its strong growth as the dominant digital platform representing 21.1 percent of all radio listening hours, up from 19.4 percent in 4Q2011. On a weekly basis, DAB now reaches 15.3 million UK adults, up 10 percent from 13.9 million in 3Q2011. DAB listening hours have reached a record 219 million, up 9 percent year over year, representing 65.2 percent of all digital listening hours.
42 percent of the population now has a DAB digital radio set, up from 40.3 percent in 4Q2011. This equates to 22 million adults now having a DAB digital radio, up 6 percent year over year. Online sources now account for 4.9 percent of all listening, up 43 percent year over year.
Many digital radio sources in the U.K saw double-digit audience growth year over year, including:
■ BBC Radio 2 13.2 percent
■ BBC Radio 4 12.8 percent
■ Capital Radio 11.8 percent
■ Classic FM 11.2 percent
■ BBC World Service 10 percent
■ BBC 6 Music 31 percent
