London - May 19, 2011 - RAJAR (Radio Joint Audience Research) has published its audience measurement results for the UK for the 1st quarter of 2011. Interestingly, radio listening has reached a new peak, the highest since records have been kept (beginning in 1992).

The main statistics:

  • 91.6 percent of the UK population tuned in to radio (for at least 5 minutes) during an average week in the quarter.
  • Total listening hours during the week exceeded 1 billion.
  • More than one-quarter of the listening was done via some sort of digital device (DAB receiver, mobile device or Internet).

Listening to radio via a digital platform has increased by 12.8 percent year over year, to 26.5 percent of the total listening hours. Access to a DAB receiver has increased 11.2 percent year over year, and nearly 2 in 5 adults (15+) claim to live in a household that has a DAB radio. Radio listening via a mobile phone has increased 10.2 percent year over year, with 13.8 percent of adults (15+) saying they have listened in this fashion. Hours spent listening to radio via the Internet has increased 28.3 percent year over year, now having reached 3.6 percent of the total listening hours.
