FCC Preps for Media Ownership Hearings in L.A.
Washington - Sep 26, 2006 - The FCC has released further details of its previously announced Los Angeles field hearing regarding media ownership. The hearings will be divided into two sessions held in two locations on Oct. 3, 2006.
From 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., the hearing will be held at the University of Southern California (USC) in the Davidson Conference Center Embassy Room. The Davidson Conference Center is located at 3415 South Figueroa St. in Los Angeles.
The second hearing will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. at El Segundo High School, 640 Main St. in El Segundo, CA.
The purpose of the hearing is to fully involve the public in the process of the 2006 Quadrennial Broadcast Media Ownership Review that the Commission is currently conducting. The hearing is open to the public, and seating will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. This hearing is the first in a series of media ownership hearings the Commission intends to hold across the country.
A final roster of panelists will be released prior to the hearing. The USC meeting will feature a panel discussion called Creative Community/Independent Programming. The El Segundo hearing will feature a panel discussion called Market Overview/LA Case Study. Both panels will be followed by a period for public comments.
A live audiocast of the hearing will be available at the FCC website on a first-come, first-served basis. Public comments may be filed with the Commission and should reference docket number 06-121. Filing instructions are provided at www.fcc.gov/ownership/comments.html.
CES Announces Session Topics for 2007 Show

Digigram Receives Microsoft Certification
Grenoble, France - Sep 28, 2006 - Digigram's HF series of sound cards have been submitted to Microsoft Windows Hardware Quality Labs (WHQL) for testing. The sounds cards have met Microsoft's standards and Microsoft has dubbed the VX222HR as "Designed for Microsoft Windows XP." With this designation, Digigram partners and customers will receive full support from Microsoft, a service that is only available to customers with this designation. Driver updates will also be available via the Windows Update website and installation time will be quicker with this certification.
Bid4spots Produces $2 Million in One Year
Dallas - Sep 20, 2006 - Bid4spots, an online auction for unsold radio ad inventory, has reached the $2 million milemarker on its first anniversary. The company has awarded that amount of auction winnings among its participating radio stations. Participants in the online auction bid ad rates down and the lowest bidder wins. Nearly 2,300 radio stations in the United States have participated in the auctions. Launched in September 2005, about 900 advertisers and and 180 ad agencies have enrolled in the Bid4spots.com system to buy last-minute airtime from radio stations.
Promo Only Hits New Numbers
Dallas - Sep 21, 2006 - Promo Only MPE is now servicing 10,000 registered users with 25,000 tracks to radio stations for more than 600 record labels and recording more than 500,000 individual downloads through the Promo Only system. Promo Only is a digital distributor of promotional music content to radio stations in the United States. Promo Only works with broadcasting companies such as Clear Channel, Citadel, Cox, Cumulus, Salem Communications, Radio One, Emmis, Entercom, Sirius and more.
Radio One Chooses Harris Again
Cincinnati - Sep 22, 2006 - Radio One, the seventh largest radio broadcasting company in the United States, has purchased Harris transmitters for its third round of HD Radio conversions. Radio One will install Harris transmitters at 17 FM stations and one AM station. As the exclusive provider to Radio One, Harris will supply the FM stations with Z Series transmitters, Flexstar HDI-100 importers, HDE-100 exporters and HDX-FM exciters for multicasting. The AM station will receive a DAX transmitter with a Dexstar exciter.
By the end of 2006 Radio One will have 35 station on the air with Harris transmitters.
Mississippi Stations Find New Way to Send Emergency Alerts
Dallas - Sep 20, 2006 - With help from the Mississippi Office of Homeland Security, 30 Mississippi radio stations have installed Global Security Systems' First Alert System to deliver emergency alerts and enhanced RDS data to first responders and listeners. The First Alert System uses a station's existing FM infrastructure to provide a consistent, open communications channel. GSS developed the single point-to-multipoint messaging system to provide redundant distribution of emergency alert messages in the event that other modes of communication become ineffective. The system uses a commercial FM receiver chip that can be inserted into smoke detectors, pagers, cell phones and PDAs to provide information during emergency situations.
"GSS is able to provide the necessary equipment free to local broadcasters not only in Mississippi, but across the country," said Roberty Adams, president of GSS. "Once installed, the system works seamlessly, requiring little or no maintenance or attention."
The system is fully compatible with the new RDS standard adopted at the June RDS Forum.
Clear Channel Chooses Barix for Southern U.S.
Zurich, Switzerland - Sep 15, 2006 - In an effort to remain on the air during emergency situations, Clear Channel Satellite Services has purchased Barix's Instreamer, Exstreamer and Barionet products to connect to its radio towers in the southern United States. Launched at the beginning of the 2006 hurricane season, the service allows Clear Channel stations in this region to remain on the air in the event of extreme weather or other disasters, and provide important information to the public.
The Clear Channel Satellite Services facility, headquartered in Englewood, CO, streams audio nonstop every day directly to the radio towers. The Instreamer and Exstreamer equipment encode and decode audio in preparation for broadcast if studios experience power outages. The Barionets, installed with Exstreamers at each radio tower site, are used to activate and automatically switch the Exstreamer back-up audio feed for transmission over the air. The Barionet devices are controlled from Englewood through an IP connection established via the satellite.
IDC Names VP of Sales, Marketing
Ottawa, Canada - Sep 28, 2006 - Edward DiCarlo has joined International Datacasting Corporation (IDC) as the vice president of sales and marketing. DiCarlo will oversee the sales, marketing and new product/service development for IDC worldwide.
DiCarlo has served in various senior level positions at Loral Skynet and Loral Cyberstar, including vice president general manager marketing and product management, vice president general manager for Latin America and vice president Europe. In these roles he was instrumental in opening and operating sales regions, closing acquisitions, and developing a suite of satellite-based IP and managed data network products. Prior to joining Loral, he was the director of marketing for CBS (Westinghouse) where he was responsible for domestic and international marketing and sales of satellite networks, as well as strategic alliances.
DiCarlo has an engineering degree from Capitol College and an MBA from the University of Baltimore. He has also participated in the Executive Education program at the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.
Barix Introduces New Feature to Instreamer, Exstreamer
Zurich, Switzerland - Sep 15, 2006 - At the NAB Radio Show in Dallas Barix introduced a new programmable software feature for its Instreamer and Exstreamer audio encoding and decoding products. The new feature allows system integrators and OEMs to develop custom applications in a network-, audio- or USB-flash environment. The Instreamer and Extstreamer products can be used for fixed STL, remote pick-ups and audio stream monitoring. With this new software feature these products can also be used to schedule announcers, for call sign generators, or network or input and output triggered alarming devices.
