NAB's Rehr to Keynote AWRT Conference
Washington - Feb 22, 2006 - The American Women in Radio and Television (AWRT) has added David Rehr, president of the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB), as its keynote speaker at its annual Leadership Summit and Business Conference being held in Washington on March 9-11. Rehr's address will cover his vision for the broadcast industry.


FCC Issues NAL Against Behringer for $1 Million
Washington - Feb 16, 2006 - The FCC proposed a $1 million fine against Behringer USA for apparent violation of the FCC's equipment authorization rules. The Commission concluded that Behringer violated the FCC's rules by marketing in the United States at least 50 models of unauthorized digital audio devices. The rules require that these devices are tested and verified to be compliant with FCC technical standards prior to marketing them in the United States.

In proposing its forfeiture amount, the Commission considered that Behringer marketed the unauthorized devices for more than five years overall and for almost a year after it was on notice of the FCC's investigation, and that Behringer derived substantial financial gain from the sale of the unauthorized devices.

The equipment found to be in violation of the FCC rules includes audio processors, equalizers, mic preamps, sample-rate converters, mixers, amplifiers and lighting controllers.

Panamax Acquires Furman Sound
Petaluma, CA - Feb 23, 2006 - Panamax has acquired Furman Sound to complement each company's offerings and expand the family of companies in the Home Technology Group of Linear. Terms of the purchase were not disclosed.

Furman Sound was created to manufacture audio and video signal processors for professional audio and video products. The company expanded its product line in 2001 to include a consumer electronics line that incorporates ac power management products.

Panamax manufactures a range of power conditioning products for home theater electronics, household appliances and office equipment.

Linear manufactures wireless residential security systems, intercoms, garage door operators, gate operators, short- and long-ranged radio remote controls and medical/emergency reporting systems.

Megahertz Broadcast Systems is transforming a Mercedes Sprinter van into a remote broadcast vehicle for Nigerian communications supplier Ponglomerape Nigeria. The van is destined for Kebbi State Radio, which operates the state radio service and broadcasts a variety of programming to audiences in Kebbi. The van will be used to cover news and sporting events and is expected to be completed by the end of March 2006.
Owari Toubu Housou, a private C-FM radio station broadcasting from Seto-shi, Japan, has installed Netia's Radio-Assist 7.5 range of digital audio software programs to manage all stages of its workflow.
The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) has purchased a Wegener Ipump System Solution for its international radio distribution network. The system will allow the BBC to distribute audio to more than 900 partners globally through advanced digital file store-forward technology, as well as traditional linear broadcasting.

President Clinton to Receive NABEF Leadership Award
Washington - Feb 21, 2006 - Former President Bill Clinton will receive the Service to America Leadership Award from the NAB Education Foundation June 12 at the eighth annual Service to America Gala. The Leadership Award is one of the NABEF's highest honors, given to individuals who have performed extraordinary public service in bettering the lives of others.

Clinton served as president from 1992 to 2000. Following his presidency, Clinton has led humanitarian initiatives, spearheading fundraising and relief efforts for victims of Hurricane Katrina and the Southeast Asian tsunami. Clinton has also made the elimination of HIV/AIDS a priority, and has raised millions of dollars for the treatment and prevention of the disease.

After leaving office, Clinton established the William J. Clinton Foundation focusing on four areas: health security, with an emphasis on HIV/AIDS; economic empowerment; leadership, development and citizen service; and racial, ethnic and religious reconciliation. The Clinton Foundation HIV/AIDS Initiative has recently expanded to provide HIV/AIDS medications to children and persons in rural areas around the globe. For his work on HIV/AIDS, Clinton was honored with the Jimmy and Rosalyn Carter Award for Humanitarian Contributions to the Health and Humankind from the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases and the 2005 Pasteur Foundation Award.

Following the Southeast Asian tsunami, President George W. Bush asked former presidents Bush and Clinton to lead a nationwide fundraising effort to help bring much-needed relief to victims of the disaster. The former presidents traveled to Asia to witness the devastation and reconstruction efforts firsthand, generating growing awareness for the cause. In March 2005, Clinton was named Special Envoy for Tsunami Recovery by United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan.

In addition to his global humanitarian efforts, Clinton served as the co-chairman of the Families of Freedom Fund with Senator Bob Dole, which raised more than $100 million in scholarship money for families of those killed or injured during the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, Clinton again teamed with President George H.W. Bush in developing the Bush-Clinton Katrina Fund, providing grants for recovery needs to areas devastated by the storm.

Recent recipients of the Service to America Leadership Award include Her Majesty Queen Noor of Jordan, First Lady Laura Bush, former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, Muhammad Ali, former President Jimmy Carter and First Lady Rosalyn Carter, and former First Lady Nancy Reagan.


OMT Technologies adds Slocum as Regional Sales Manager
Winnipeg, MB - Feb 22, 2006 - OMT Technologies has added Scott Slocum to the Imediatouch sales team as a regional sales manager for its broadcast automation software and line of Imedia products.

A 35-year broadcast veteran, Slocum most recently served as the national sales manager for Radio magazine. Slocum has worked in every phase of the broadcasting business, including station ownership, management, programming, news and production. He is an Extra Class amateur radio operator and RAB-certified radio marketing consultant.


APT Names Asian Sales Manager
Belfast, Ireland - Feb 21, 2006 - Codec manufacturer Audio Processing Technology (APT) has appointed Guy Gampell to the position of Asian sales manager. Gampell joins the company from AMS Neve where he was involved in sales. He has also previously worked for several pro audio brands including Sadie and Akai.

HD Digital Radio Alliance Launches Promotional Campaign
Orlando - Feb 20, 2006 - Twelve radio ownership groups that comprise the newly formed HD Digital Radio Alliance have kicked off the first phase of a promised $200 million advertising campaign to educate and motivate consumers toward adoption of HD Radio technology. The 250 alliance member stations will air ads designed to spur consumer interest in the 28 markets nationwide where the technology has already launched. The campaign includes spots developed by longtime radio advertising specialists Dick Orkin and the Radio Ranch.

The campaign aims to build momentum behind the about 700 radio stations that are currently broadcasting their primary analog signals via hybrid HD digital signals. The move follows on the heels of an alliance announcement that 250 new formats have been selected in selected markets across the country for broadcasting on HD2 multicast channels.

In an unconventional approach, station owners will devote a portion of their total ad time commitment to promoting receiver makers, retailers and automakers who offer HD Radio products. For example, some 25 percent of spots in the first wave will highlight Boston Acoustics' Receptor Radio HD. The move is designed to reward Boston Acoustics for lowering its price point on that system to $299 as of Feb. 1.

"The creative on these spots is fun, entertaining and informative," said Peter Ferrar, president of the HD Digital Radio Alliance. "With the industry and listener momentum we're seeing, we're able to showcase what radio does best--engage and inform."

The first wave of spots--16 in 30- and 15-second versions--highlight HD Radio's improved quality audio and increased local entertainment choices.

The ads also emphasize that digital radio, unlike satellite radio, never requires a subscription fee.
