Quantegy to Discontinue Various Magnetic Tape Products
Opelika, AL - Jan 22, 2007 - Quantegy Recording Solutions has discontinued various magnetic tape product lines after manufacturing these products for more than 60 years. In a press release, Quantegy notes that improvements in other technologies has resulted in a decreased demand for magnetic tape media. Quantegy will center its focus on research and development of new technology to better serve its primary markets.
The discontinued product include video and instrumentation tapes and a series of audio tapes: GP9, 400 series, 600 series, ADAT, DAT and DAU.
Orders for the discontinued products will be accepted through Feb. 28, 2007, and production for and fulfillment of those orders will be completed by April 2007. Contact Quantegy at 800-752-0732 or email@example.com.
Quantegy was formed from a division of Ampex in the 1990s.
Recently, Quantegy has developed the FHD and Black Diamond family of hard drive storage systems, and plans to continue with that new technology.
For about two years, Quantegy was the only manufacturer of open-reel tape in the world. Last year, Netherlands-based RMG began manufacturing Emtec tape products. The Quantegy announcement leaves RMG as the sole manufacturer.
RCS and Prophet Systems to Merge
San Antonio, TX - Jan 19, 2007 - Clear Channel is merging two of its technology units, RCS and Prophet Systems, to create a combined software company with 5,000 U.S. clients and more than 4,000 international customers. Philippe Generali, president of RCS will lead the combined company. Chip Jellison, former co-president of Prophet Systems will head technology and development.
The merged company will retain the name RCS and be headquartered in White Plains, NY, while maintaining operations in Ogallala, NE. The company will maintain and support all current products, and will start work on new product development from its combined resources.
Several employees have been laid off, but Clear Channel has declined to comment on specific names. Clear Channel acquired Prophet Systems in 1997 and RCS in 2006.
SBE Offers Management Training for Engineers
Indianapolis - Jan 19, 2007 - Too often, seminars intended to train and educate instead leave the attendees fighting boredom and trying to stay awake. The Leader-Skills Seminar offered by the Society of Broadcast Engineers (SBE) appears to break this mold, being described as "an eye-opening experience" by Brian Gallagher, who attended the 2006 Leader-Skills Seminar in Indianapolis. Gallagher added that the instructor, Richard Cupka, is "obviously one of the best at what he does."
Gallagher was one of 14 people who attended Course I of the seminar that was held in June 2006. Course I graduates continued their leadership training with a second course offered in Indianapolis in August last year.
The SBE Leader-Skills Series, now in its 11th consecutive year of sponsorship by the society, is specifically designed for broadcast engineers who have or aspire to have management responsibilities.
"The SBE has its foundations in providing educational opportunities for broadcast engineers and in furthering the broadcast engineering profession," said SBE President Chriss Scherer, CPBE CBNT. "The Leader Skills Seminar fits perfectly with these goals."
The SBE offers the two-part series in cooperation with instructor Richard Cupka, who has more than 40 years of experience in adult training. Cupka has directed and taught the Leader-Skills seminars to broadcast engineering managers, supervisors and technicians for that entire span of time. Before the SBE began sponsoring the course, the course was conducted through the NAB for close to 30 years. Many respected broadcast engineering managers in the country today are graduates of the program and continue to send members of their staffs so that they, too, can learn from Cupka, who is known for his unique style of teaching.
This year, Course I, Leadership - The Framework of People Skills, will be held June 5 to June 7, 2007, at the Holiday Inn Select Airport in Indianapolis. It covers the function and nature of the leadership role; how to build stronger teams and effective internal cooperativeness; the complex differences of people; discovery of a person's natural style of leading and how to nurture a developed style to help the manager adjust to different people in differing situations.
Designed to take technically adept people and instill in them sound supervisory and management skills, the SBE Leader-Skills Series can also be viewed as a tool for personal growth and development, even for those without prior management or supervisory responsibilities.
Each course is limited to a minimum of 10 and a maximum of 18 participants. Deadline to register for Course I is May 2. The cost of registration is $545, which includes three days of instruction, all course materials, a certificate of completion and classroom refreshments. All transportation, housing and meals are the responsibility of the participant. Accommodations are available at the seminar hotel.
Course II, Leadership - Expanding Your People Skills, picks up where Course I leaves off and will be offered from Aug. 7 to Aug. 9, 2007, also in Indianapolis at the Holiday Inn Select Airport.
APT Opens U.S. Offices, Makes Appointments
Boston - Jan 22, 2007 - APT has opened two new sales offices in the United States and made two sales appointments for the company's North American operations. Kevin Campbell, formerly European sales manager with APT has taken the post of VP North American operations, and Ted Nahil, formerly of Harris, has been appointed as national accounts manager.
APT opened the new offices to better accommodate its existing and expected future user base in North America.
Ted Nahil has been in broadcasting for more than 30 years. He spent six years in the Broadcast Communications Division of Harris as sales and channel manager for Intraplex products and has also worked for Greater Media Detroit, Noble Boston, Shamrock and Salem Denver. He has been a chief engineer or director of engineering for facilities in Boston, Detroit and Denver, and in satellite radio and TV in Avon, CT, and Detroit. In his new role as national accounts manager, Nahil will serve the radio and TV STL customers in North, Central and South America and the Caribbean.
Kevin Campbell has worked with APT since July 2003, and has been quickly promoted through the ranks holding a number of sales and customer support roles with responsibility for customers throughout Europe and the United States.
Most recently, as European sales manager, he secured major projects and tenders with Canal Sur, PT Emitel and Euro Radio. AS VP North American operations, Campbell will work to grow APT's market share among the broadcast and post-production communities in the United States and Canada.
APT's headquarters are in Belfast, Northern Ireland. The company also has has sales offices in Japan and Germany.
RFS Restructures Cable Pricing
Meriden, CT - Jan 22, 2007 - Radio Frequency Systems (RFS) has modified its transmission line pricing structure in an effort to reduce its customers' administrative burden. Previously, customers were required to identify raw material surcharges (RMSC) as a separate line item, which was subject to quarterly revisions. Now the company will present net prices to include the RMSC.
The RMSC was separately charged because of the fluctuating price of raw materials. RFS states the practice was necessary to ensure continued quality of supply and to partially offset the cost effect on transmission line products. According to RFS, although raw material pricing remains at a high level, it stabilized considerably toward the end of 2006.
First Electronic Diary Arrives at Arbitron
New York - Jan 24, 2007 - Arbitron acknowledged that the first electronic diary has been submitted for the Winter 2007 survey. The first electronic diary keeper was a 31-year-old woman in the Honolulu metro. She submitted 11 entries, amounting to seven hours of radio listening to four radio stations. All the entries were for listening in the car.
Radio survey participants in diary-based markets now have the option to use an Internet-based, electronic diary in place of the standard paper-and-pencil survey tool. The electronic diary system was introduced in Winter 2007 to give respondents the option to use a survey tool that better fits their lifestyle and habits. Based on its tests of the electronic diary, Arbitron expects that at least one out of every 20 survey participants will choose the Internet-based option over the paper-and-pencil version.
Arbitron expects those who will use the Internet option are more likely to be younger. In the Arbitron tests, the largest demographic group of electronic diary keepers is between the ages of 25 and 34 while the largest demographic group of paper diarykeepers is between the ages of 45 and 54. Also, electronic diary keepers are more likely to work full-time.
Arbitron notes that its test shows that there is no significant difference in the number of quarter-hours of listening or the number of stations entered into the electronic diary vs. the paper diary. A sample of a radio diary Web page can be viewed at this link.

BE to Host HD Radio Seminar at NAB2007
Quincy, IL - Jan 25, 2007 - Lessons learned from the first 1,000 HD Radio stations will be the focus of the Broadcast Electronics (BE) engineering seminar at NAB2007. The seminar will be held at the Las Vegas Convention Center on Saturday, April 14.
Registration begins in February. The seminar is free to all interested broadcasters. It will be held from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the LVCC Room N-211 on April 14.
Symetrix Promotes Worona
Mountlake Terrace, WA - Jan25, 2007 - Symetrix has appointed Michael Worona to the newly created position of director of business development. As the new business leader, Worona will oversee efforts to establish new markets and develop new products with the goal of continued growth and expansion of Symetrix products. In addition, his responsibilities will include the development of an ongoing series of technical training and education seminars for existing and new accounts, and work closely with designers and integrators involved in large venue installation.
Worona has been with Symetrix for more than four years where he held the position of product specialist. Prior to Symetrix he was employed by Loud Technologies in the digital development department.
Jeff Keith Joins Wheatstone Team
New Bern, NC - Jan 24, 2007 - Wheatstone has enlisted veteran broadcast engineer Jeff Keith to head its Vorsis audio processing design department. Keith has been a key figure in the broadcast industry for more than 30 years. He has worked as an engineer in major market radio stations in Orlando and Cleveland and also possesses a strong background in marketing and product development.
He was previously employed by Telos and Omnia where he served for five years as project manager and two years as director of engineering. Keith holds certifications from the SBE and NARTE.
NAB Names New CFO
Washington - Jan 25, 2007 - Michael S. Williams has been named chief financial officer and executive vice president, finance and operations at the National Association of Broadcasters. Williams starts at the broadcast trade association on Jan. 29.
Williams has held top financial positions at several multi-million dollar organizations, including executive vice president at the Motion Picture Association of America and executive vice president, finance and operations at the Recording Industry Association of America. During his nine-year tenure at RIAA, Williams helped create Sound Exchange, a business that represents tens of thousands of recording artists and a number of record companies focused on accurate distribution of copyright royalty payments.
Williams began his career as a CPA, working at Arthur Andersen and at Ernst and Young. Williams holds a bachelor's degree in accounting from the University of Maryland.
Davicom Ships Next Generation Mac
Quebec City, QC - Jan 9, 2007 - Davicom is now shipping Next Generation Davicom Mac units designed for remote transmitter sites and unattended studios. The system features as many as 128 metering and 256 status inputs, and 256 relays. User-configurable logic functions can detect and correct faults. The units have multiple alarm-call lists for day/night work shifts, vacations and specific events. Multi-level alarms can be sent using various means of communications including secure 128-bit encrypted IP. The units are also dual-modem ready.
As many as four users can connect simultaneously to a Mac using the Mac Comm software or a touch-tone telephone. The screen displays and the voice response system are customizable and can support two languages.
