DRM Welcomes 1st Symposium in Moscow
Bonn, Germany – Digital Radio Mondiale is the topic of conversation at the 1st International DRM Symposium in Russia which takes place Oct. 9-12 in Moscow at the President Hotel. More than 150 attendees from all over the world are expected. The attendees' high level of expertise is reflected in the caliber of the topics that will be discussed during the symposium. These range from technical aspects concerning DRM broadcasts to DRM commercial strategy with DRM receivers. The symposium presents a complete insight into DRM and its concept of implementation in Russia. The digital broadcasting system for long-, medium- and short-wave offers a dramatic improvement over the crackle and pop of analogue AM. Besides providing a near FM quality sound, the DRM system gives the option to integrate data and text. Two DRM special frequencies for the symposium are broadcasted. The DRM consortium welcomes the first DRM symposium in Russia as an important step in the national development of DRM in Russia and all over the world.

FCC Clarifies Dual Antenna Hybrid Operation Notification Procedures
Washington - Oct 2, 2007 - The FCC's Second Report and Order, First Order on Reconsideration and Second Further Notice of Proposed Rule Making in MM Docket No. 99-325 was published in the Federal Register on Aug. 15, 2007. The effective date of new notification procedures for FM broadcast stations operating in hybrid IBOC mode with dual antenna systems is Sept. 14, 2007. In response to several inquiries from the public, the FCC issued a public notice to clarify the notification procedures for stations currently operating with dual antenna systems under special temporary authorization (STA).

The technical information requirements for STA requests for dual antenna operation, which were set forth in a public notice released on March 17, 2004, are substantially the same as those that will be required for dual antenna IBOC notifications going forward under the new rules adopted in the Second Report and Order. In addition, those stations that commenced dual-antenna IBOC operation via STA already have been designated as hybrid digital stations in the Media Bureau's Consolidated Database System (CDBS).

For these reasons, FM stations that are currently operating digitally under STA are deemed to have provided the notification required by newly adopted 47 C.F.R. Section 73.404, and such stations will not be required to file a new notification with the Commission, unless a subsequent change is made in the technical parameters of the IBOC operation or the technical contact information.

WQXR Internet Audio Stream Now Available on Itunes Radio
Oct 8, 2007 - The Internet audio stream of WQXR, the classical station of The New York Times, is now available on Itunes Radio. The stream is accessible through the Radio option in the Itunes Player, as one of the choices in the Classical category.

The station has been expanding access to its stream through various platforms as it continues to enhance its website; the stream will continue to be available in both Windows Media Player and Real Player formats.

Radio Systems Goes to the Movies
Philadelphia - Oct 5, 2007 - When Hollywood wants realism, it turns to the industries being portrayed to ensure that what moviegoers see is closer to reality than fiction. In September, the movie The Brave One staring Jodie Foster was released.

In the movie, radio host Erica Bain (Foster) works and lives in New York City. When her husband is killed and she is severely beaten, Bain copes with the tragic event by becoming a vigilante. Because the lead character's career is that of a radio host, the movie required a radio studio. The role also required Foster to learn how to act like a radio personality, which included the technical operations of radio.

To construct the radio studio, Warner Brothers approached Radio Systems for its facility integration experience. The working studio was built on a Brooklyn soundstage.

For Foster, learning how to operate radio equipment was important to make her character believable. To show her the ropes, Daniel Braverman, president of Radio Systems, met with Foster at the studios of WOR so she could learn how it all worked. Voodoovox Inks Jones Media America for Partnership
New York - Oct 8, 2007 - Jones Media America has been awarded a three-year contract to serve as the exclusive Voodoovox In-Call Media sales representative for US-based radio and television broadcasters. The agreement is expected to generate $2.3M in ad sales for Voodoovox over the first year, and more than $10 million over the course of the entire contract.

Currently integrated into hundreds of telecom "publishers" generating 300 million calls monthly, the Voodoovox In-Call Network is creating new revenue for world-renowned brands including IDT, Univision, Virgin Mobile, Nokia, Microsoft and Showtime, among others.


FDW takes over Cable Up line
Middleton, WI - In the fall of 2006, Vu purchased the trademark and remaining inventory of Cable-up brand cables from the Teac Corporation. During the ensuing months, research was conducted to determine the most effective method of manufacturing. Officials at Vu determined the only way quality can be assured is by inspecting on-site and making the cables by hand in America.

At the AES convention in New York, Oct. 5-8, 2007, Vu reintroduced Cable-Up to the world. Features of the new Cable-Up cables include maximum flexibility at low temperatures, ruggedness with maximum flex life and abrasion resistance, high purity OFC copper with a high strand count, low capacitance for extended high frequency response and enhanced stability for power amplifiers and active microphones. The line includes:

Broadcast Bionics represents Axia in the UK
Cleveland – Oct 8, 2007 - Axia Audio has tapped Broadcast Bionics of West Sussex, England as the UK distributor for Axia IP-Audio networking products. The Axia IP-Audio system allows broadcasters to build audio networks of any size using standard Switched Ethernet to connect a few rooms, or an entire facility.

Axia networks can carry hundreds of digital stereo (or nearly a hundred surround) audio channels over a standard CAT-6 cable, eliminating much of the cost normally associated with wiring labor and infrastructure. Axia products include the popular Element modular broadcast console, a family of audio nodes that allow easy mixing and matching of digital, analog and microphone audio, and a comprehensive suite of routing control software.


Wideorbit Continues Significant Growth Path in 2007
San Francisco - Oct 11, 2007 - Wideorbit has seen growth in 2007 in areas including station count, head count, product development and management of advertising revenue. At this time in 2006, Wideorbit had installed its WO Traffic in just more than 500 stations and networks. This was double the number of stations and networks compared to the same time in 2005. Now in 2007, the company has installed its product in more than 900 stations and networks and has expanded into Europe and India. In order to handle the increase in business, Wideorbit has increased its staff from 80 employees in January of 2006 to more than 185 by the end of 2007. The largest increases can be seen in the number of implementation specialists, account managers and customer support representatives. Wideorbit is also actively recruiting developers for new product development.


Targetspot and Pulse 360 Announce Pact
New York - Oct 9, 2007 - Targetspot and Pulse 360 will market each other's products to their respective advertiser bases. The partnership brings together two companies with a focus on technological innovations.

Pulse 360's advertising and publishing solutions give clients the means to get the most reach and return from their ads and sites. The company has thousands of advertisers and a network of many of the Web's best publishers, and recently launched the first of many Publisher's Vertical Networks to allow publishers to create branded vertical ad networks. Targetspot, which opened their door to advertisers last month, has already signed partnership deals with a number of the top radio and internet broadcasters across the country. The service will be available on over 400 stations nationwide.

Targetspot's technology allows businesses of all sizes to create, buy and place their own advertising messages within streaming media. Using Targetspot's system, advertisers can create customized audio, video, banner and text ads with an array of jingles, sound effects and visuals provided by Targetspot. Clients can also upload their current creative directly into their Targetspot account. Ads are then targeted to a specific demographic, location and/or station.


Project Apollo Pilot Includes Radio Networks
New York - Oct 8, 2007 - Project Apollo, the joint initiative of Arbitron and The Nielsen Company, announced today that audience estimates to the radio commercials broadcast on the network and syndicated programs provided by Dial Global, Jones Media America, Premiere Radio Networks and Westwood One are now being included in the media data that will be available to the seven advertisers participating in the Project Apollo Steering Committee.

The network and syndicated radio audience information is the latest addition to the syndicated Project Apollo media dataset that currently includes broadcast television networks, cable networks, magazines, newspapers and circulars.

New York City's WQXR-FM is implementing Netia's Radio-Assist 7.5 range of digital audio software programs and Isilon Systems' Isilon IQ clustered storage system. WQXR-FM is the classical music radio station of the New York Times and the nation's first commercial classical music radio station.
Eagle Broadband completed a large satellite downlink installation for 1560 The Game in Houston. The project involved the installation of multiple (fixed and moveable) 3.8-meter antennas on the roof of 1560. This project required a 150-foot crane to mount the antennas on top of the six story commercial building that hosts the station. The project also called for Eagle's technicians to complete the cabling infrastructure from the roof to the station's fourth floor newly remodeled operations center. Also, Eagle provided and installed Starguide satellite receivers, collecting programming from various feeds such as ABC and ESPN across the country.

Slocum Working With Smarts Broadcast Systems
Scott Slocum is now representing the product lines of broadcast software and hardware for Smarts Broadcast Systems of Dallas and Emmetsburg, IA. Smarts offers the Windows-based traffic and billing software, as well as the Linux-based Smartcaster and Skylla digital audio systems for live and automated media outlets.

Slocum is a veteran of the broadcast business, with a recent stint as a representative for OMT/Imediatouch, and 11 years of service with Computer Concepts (now a part of Google) in its broadcast division. He also worked as national sales manager for Radio magazine, and began Turnkey Media Systems in 2002, providing specialty broadcast software and hardware applications.

Before his involvement on the vendor side, Slocum worked in all aspects of broadcasting, from station programming and consulting to on-air positions, news, and station management and ownership.

HD Radio Manufacturing Capacity Doubled Since 2006
Hong Kong - Oct 11, 2007 - Ibiquity Digital announced that the demand for HD Radio receivers has resulted in a doubling of partner manufacturing capacity in Asia during the past year. Nearly 60 companies are licensed and certified to manufacture HD Radio modules, components, receivers and tuners. In addition, new modules and reference designs were introduced to enhance HD Radio receiver production with advanced features: Ibiquity is offering a reference kit to support receiver/Ipod docking products with Itunes Tagging for HD Radio technology; LG Innotek is offering an HD Radio module that supports Conditional Access, Store and Replay as well as Itunes Tagging capabilities; and Samsung EM is offering a new module, the 2023 slave mode HD Radio module, that offers a quick path to market for end-product manufacturers.

Itunes Tagging for HD Radio technology enables consumers using HD Radio receivers equipped with a special tag button to select songs that they hear on the FM dial for subsequent purchase on-line through Itunes. Six leading broadcast groups (CBS Radio, Clear Channel, Cumulus, Cox, Entercom and Greater Media), which represent thousands of local AM/FM stations, are in the process of installing Itunes Tagging technology at the local station level.
