The Latest From the Sat Merger Debate
Washington, DC - Aug. 9, 2007 - The NAB recently released its analysis of the proposed a la carte pricing and programming plan offered by XM and Sirius in their bid for a merger. From the analysis, the NAB has stated that under every programming package offered through an a la carte scheme, consumers will be charged higher prices-per-channel (40 to 188 percent more) than they currently pay.
The NAB also stated that both a la carte packages offered under a merger entity would include onerous restrictions and limitations preventing consumers from enjoying true a la carte choice. Consumers would also be required to buy a new radio for this programming. The analysis can be viewed at the NAB's website.
In opposition to the NAB's concerns Joele Frank released a statement saying the NAB's continuing effort to scuttle the merger clearly demonstrates they view satellite radio as a competitor, even as they claim the opposite.
The company also stated that the NAB set a new low in responding to Sirius/XM's announcement of the new offerings, which they believe offer two unprecedented a la carte programming options to consumers, available on newly equipped radios priced the same as current ones. In attacking the new a la carte plans because of the new radios needed to enjoy them, Frank said the NAB conveniently ignores the fact that HD Radio, introduced by the NAB's own members, also requires consumers to purchase new equipment to receive the HF Radio signal.
Frank points out that during the FCC's 45-day comment and reply period, more than 4,000 comments were filed in favor of the merger from individuals as well as many prestigious organizations and businesses, such as Circuit City, Honda, Hyundai, the American Trucking Association, the National Consumers League, American Values, the League of Rural Voters and Women Impacting Public Policy.
NAB Radio Show Features Marketing Super Session
Washington - Jul 30, 2007 - Marketing executives from Anheuser-Busch, Dunkin' Donuts, Pepsi-Cola and Carat will share their insights on radio in a super session entitled What America's Most Influential Marketers Say About Radio. The session will take place on Sept. 27 at 1:30 p.m. during The NAB Radio Show.
The panelists include Frances Allen, brand marketing officer at Dunkin' Donuts; Frank Cooper III, VP of marketing for Pepsi-Cola in North America; Tony Ponturo, VP of global media and sports marketing for Anheuser-Busch; and David Verklin, CEO of Carat Americas and chairman of Carat Asia Pacific.
Jetcast Adds More Streaming Seminars
New York - Aug 6, 2007 - Jetcast has added six more sessions of its free Jetcast Radio Webinar called Streaming Myth-busters. The new dates and times (ET) are:
Aug. 7: 10 a.m., 4 p.m.
Aug. 14: 10 a.m., 4 p.m.
Aug. 21: 10 a.m., 4 p.m.
The webinar provides a basic orientation to radio streaming and various strategies to consider. Michael Dalfonzo and Tom Zarecki lead the 20-minute session.
WEBO-AM Returns to Full Power
Quincy, IL - Aug 6, 2007 - An AM station on the air with a new Broadcast Electronics AM 5E transmitter and a temporary long wire will be restored to full power this week, thanks to a determined young broadcaster. WEBO AM 1330, licensed to Owego, NY, has been radiating 1kW from a long copper wire strung across three telephone poles as part of an STA since July 2006. 25-year-old David Radigan purchased the station at that time and acquired a BE AM 5E solid-state transmitter to replace a plate-modulated transmitter.
Under a previous ownership, the news station was divested of its capital assets and sold for one dollar. At one point, the AM operated as part of the town's movie theater operation. Radigan has been operating the 5kW BE AM 5E at a reduced 1kW output pending FCC and local approval of a construction permit for a new tower facility, designed by Consulting Engineer Bill Sitzman of Independent Broadcast Consultants of Trumansburg, NY.
Construction was to be completed last week for the new tower located in the village of Owego, within two miles of the station's original tower site. Early this week, BE's AM 5E will restore the station to 5kW non-directional daytime power, reducing power to 36W at night.
Middle Atlantic Adds to staff
Fairfield, NJ - Aug 9, 2007 - Middle Atlantic Products has made several appointments to its staff. Jonathan Pope is now the company's second regional sales manager in the Western USA. Pope will report to Sales Director Whitt Adams and will be responsible for supporting and assisting Middle Atlantic Products customers throughout the 13 western states with particular focus on the Pacific Northwest area.
Before joining Middle Atlantic, Pope worked as the western regional manager for Keywest Technology and Focus Enhancements.
Richard Lefkowitz has also joined the company as electrical/electronic engineering manager, and Murray Williams has been hired as electrical/electronic products manager. Lefkowitz has more than 20 years experience in engineering management, project management and hands-on design in a broad range of technologies, including networking, datacomm and telecom, control and automation, and processor design. He was most recently with Crestron Electronics. Lefkowitz holds a B.E.E. degree and a Masters in electrical engineering.
Williams' experience includes a position with British Royal Aeronautical Establishment where he worked on the development of aeronautical avionics systems, a marketing-centric position with Dow Jones and a stint with Reuters where he provided consulting services for IP-based network computing and product management for web-based computing applications. Williams also holds a B.E.E. degree.
Yellowtec Adds Product Manager
Monheim, Germany - Aug 6, 2007 - Reinhard Gallos has been hired as Yellowtec's new product manager. With a background in sound and vision engineering, he now assumes control of development, manufacture and technical services at Yellowtec.
Gallos has experience in current communications technology development from many years in project and product management at mobile wireless manufacturer BenQ-Siemens.
Wideorbit Adds Tankersley to Sales Team
San Francisco - Aug 9, 2007 - Danny Tankersley, formerly of Wicks Broadcast Solutions, has joined Wideorbit as the regional sales director. Tankersley has more than 23 years of radio software sales experience. He joins Bunk Robinson, Jon Crossland and Maria Stokes.
Tankersley will report directly to Mike Zinsmeister, vice president of sales for Wideorbit.
