Ford, GM Have Different Strategies for In-car Internet
Detroit - Feb 26, 2013 - Ford Motor Company will be the first automobile manufacturer to launch a new service to be called Spotify in the Car according to an article in Forbes magazine.
Spotify currently has 20 million active users and 5 million paying subscribers. It's available in 20 countries, including the U.S. Initially, this service will only work on the iPhone with a Spotify Premium account, and a Ford vehicle with Sync AppLink--about a million people across the U.S. There's no word on when Spotify will release the necessary update to its app on Apple's App Store.
While Ford emphasizes the use of an iPhone in the car for connectivity, GM has a different strategy; it announced on Feb. 24, 2013, that its OnStar subsidiary was partnering with AT&T to launch direct Internet service in a range of GM cars in 2014, using the AT&T 4G network.
