NPR Seeks Input from Member Stations on Loudness
WASHINGTON DC--The Public Radio Satellite System, provider of satellite distribution for a variety of programming from NPR and other syndicators, is asking for input from users on audio level standards.
In a memo to stations, PRSS had this to say: "The national and international audio and broadcast industry has heightened awareness about loudness levels in audio and the need to achieve consistency between programs. The Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) has developed a loudness standard for television in order to comply with the Commercial Advertisement Loudness Mitigation (CALM) Act. The CALM Act regulates the audio of TV commercials. The International Telecommunication Union (ITU), European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and Audio Engineering Society (AES) also have loudness recommendations for all broadcasters. In meeting these standards, there’s also a movement away from using peak program meters to measure audio levels and a trend toward using instruments and processes that measure audio loudness."
Stations were given a survey link to provide input. The results from the survey will be used to better understand the issues surrounding loudness on the PRSS and develop recommendations for best practices in achieving audio level consistency.
