Norwegian DAB+ Networks Build-out Continues On Pace
Aug 27, 2013 - Norkring has activated DAB+ transmitters for Møre og Romsdal, a region in Norway to the north and west of Oslo. The company has installed 44 transmitters in just more than one year. The first installations of DAB+ transmitters were made in Gamlemsveten, near Alesund, in May 2012. Reinsfjell was put in to trial operation in July 2012.
Norkring is building two networks throughout Norway: one for NRK (the government-owned, public broadcaster) and one for commercial stations. The networks will have the nationwide capacity for 40 different stations, and Norkring expects completion of the entire system by the end of 2014. Ultimately, 700 DAB+ transmitter sites are expected to cover 99.5 percent of the nation's population. Currently plans are in the works to completely sunset FM broadcasting in Norway in 2017.
