Johannesburg - Jan 29, 2014 - A DAB+ test is scheduled for Johannesburg and Pretoria, South Africa, according to WorldDMB News. After coverage verification tests, the two transmitters will operate as a single frequency network in VHF band III, on channel 13F at 239.2MHz. The two cities are separated by about 36 miles. It is anticipated that between 18 and 20 commercial and public broadcasters will participate in the trial, which will test the following:

■ Performance in the field using typical consumer equipment and professional test and measurement equipment.
■ The effects of vehicle penetration loss, building penetration loss and clutter (e.g. buildings and vegetation) on coverage.
■ Demonstrate digital radio services and value-added services
■ Testing of the various encoding methods (stereo, para stereo, mono) for different audio types and at different bit rates to get a good understanding of what bit rates/encoding to use for the different program types.
■ Investigate the delivery of PAD within these tests, synchronization with the audio and rate of change of the images.

The total area covered by the trial encompasses a total gross population of 10,705,387, which is about 21.5 percent of total SA population.
