NPR and APM Encourage Activation of FM Chips in Cell Phones
July 8, 2014 - American Public Media (APM) and National Public Radio (NPR) issued a note to stations today urging them to have listeners contact cellular carriers regarding activation of FM chips.
Sprint is currently the only major carrier in the US that sells phones with the FM chip enabled. Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile thus far do not provide FM radio service on their phones, although T-Mobile did recently begin offering free audio streaming.
The note issued this morning from APM and NPR urges stations to ask that their listeners contact the other carriers in a show of support for FM on smartphones. It also encourages stations to sign up with TagStation so that their station's name and logo can be displayed in the NextRadio app.
APM and NPR join a number of other broadcasters in backing the NextRadio initiative to enable FM chips in smartphones and believe that doing so is critical for providing their listeners with up-to-the-minute news, public safety, and weather information.
With APM and NPR voicing support for the initiative, and Educational Media Foundation recently adding their stations to the fray, Emmis owned NextRadio now includes some of the largest players from all major sectors of the Broadcasting industry; Public, Religious and Commercial.
