NAB's Smith and RAB's Farber Address 2012 Radio Show
Dallas - Sep 19, 2012 - NAB President and CEO Gordon Smith and RAB President and CEO Erica Farber delivered their opening remarks at the 2012 Radio Show. Both noted the important role radio plays in consumers' lives, but in different ways.
Smith discussed the role radio plays during emergencies, such as the recent problems cause by Hurricane Isaac. He noted that "Broadcasters quickly stepped in, fulfilling their role as first informers... heeding warnings and providing non-stop coverage of the hurricane's path."
He also noted that mobile phones are an ideal way to reach listeners; not by the phone provider, but via built-in FM radio receivers. With receivers in cell phones, radio can supplement the emergency alert efforts of the cell providers because radio doesn't have the service bandwidth limitations.
Smith went on to note that reaches more than 242 million American listeners each week, and that number continues to grow each year. He also posed a question to ask if radio's future was in terrestrial transmission or in streaming. Or both.
Farber's comments discussed the importance of audio information and entertainment. She noted that radio is not tied to a device, but that radio is everywhere: It's in the car, it's online, it's on a phone, it's on mobile devices.
She pointed out that consumers are interacting with radio across many platforms. She said that radio has tremendous consumer adoption. She urged attendees to focus on one common goal: Growing the radio industry.
