Lerwick, Shetland Islands - Aug 26, 2011 - The Shetland Islands are an archipelago of Scotland, located in the North Sea about 110 miles north of the mainland of Great Britain. The latitude of the main island is about the same as Bergen, Norway. However, as remote though they are, the islands are now served by the BBC's DAB service, since new transmitters at Scalloway and Bressay were turned on this week. Their service area should encompass about 3/4 of the population of the islands; some 17,000 people. Stations now available include BBC Radio 1, 2, 3 and 4, 5Live, 1Extra, 6Music, 5Live extra, the BBC World Service and the Asian network. Ironically, neither Radio Scotland nor are available; those stations are carried in Scotland by commercial multiplexes, which are not available in the Shetlands.
