Jan 9, 2012 - Germany's ARD and other private broadcasters in the country will soon start disseminating traffic information via DAB+ radio. The new service, based on TPEG, and able to transmit text and images, will start up in the first quarter of 2012.

Traffic information sent via DAB+ will allow drivers to get the information they need to avoid congestion faster and more accurately, according to Martin Dreher of Bavarian Media. The new technology will also allow a driver to see the traffic hazards for the entire route ahead. "This is the next generation of mobility information," according to Dreher.

Germany's Central Association of the Electrical and Electronics Industry (ZVEI) estimates that the total of digital radios sold will exceed 1 million during this year.
