Coraline Director Henry Selick to Keynote NAB Show Session
Washington, DC - Henry Selick, director of the recently released 3-D, stop-motion animated film Coraline, will be a featured keynote speaker during the 2009 NAB Show in Las Vegas. Speaking in an afternoon keynote on Monday, April 20, Selick will offer show attendees his thoughts on how digital technology has helped to revitalize the handcrafted approach of stop-motion animation.
Distributed by Focus Features, Coraline offers audiences what Selick calls "a fully immersive three-dimensional movie-going experience." The first stop-motion animated feature to be shot entirely in stereoscopic 3-D, the film opened in the U.S. on Feb. 6 to lavish critical praise and has already generated more than $40 million at the box office. Kenneth Turan writing for the Los Angeles Times said, "The third dimension comes of age with Coraline. The first contemporary film in which the 3-D experience feels intrinsic to the story instead of a Godforsaken gimmick, Coraline is a remarkable feat of imagination, a magical tale with a genuinely sinister edge."
Selick, a director, producer and stop-motion animation pioneer, is also well known for other directorial works including The Nightmare Before Christmas and James and the Giant Peach.
Selick made his feature film directing debut in 1993 with The Nightmare Before Christmas, the first full-length, stop-motion feature from a major studio. An instant holiday classic, "Nightmare" was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects and won the International Animated Film Society's Annie Award for Best Creative Supervision.
In 1996, Selick followed with a second feature, James and the Giant Peach, which combines stop-motion animation with computer graphics. The film received widespread critical acclaim and won the top prize for an animated feature at the Annecy Film Festival in 1997. After joining the animation studio LAIKA in 2004, Selick directed his first computer-generated effort, the award-winning short film Moongirl.
Battlestar Galactica Creator and Executive Producer David Eick to Present Keynote at NAB Show
Washington, DC - Battlestar Galactica Co-creator and Executive Producer David Eick will present an afternoon keynote address entitled "The Making of Battlestar Galactica" at the 2009 NAB Show on Tuesday, April 21 in Las Vegas. The Super Session will focus on how to launch and produce a hit TV franchise that breaks the traditional mold seen in many television program storylines.
Eick will discuss how the legendary sci-fi series came together -- conceptually, technically and politically. He will show clips from the series and provide an inside look at Battlestar Galactica's rebirth and production, including educational details about its visual effects, production design, casting and directorial battles for creative integrity.
Eick's presentation will be followed by a sit-down discussion with Battlestar Galactica Co-supervising Producer and Writer David Weddle. Weddle's credits also include supervising producer of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, and author of 2001's critically-acclaimed biography If They Move, Kill 'Em! - The Life and Times of Sam Peckinpah.
Eick has produced many popular television shows including USA Network's acclaimed drama Cover Me and the critically-celebrated comedy Manhattan, AZ. At the SCI FI Channel, Eick launched the network's first internally-produced hit, The Invisible Man. He also produced the successful syndicated series Hercules: The Legendary Journeys and co-developed and launched its spin-off, Xena: Warrior Princess.
Additionally, Eick served as producer of the critically-acclaimed CBS series American Gothic; co-produced five Hercules movies for first-run syndication; produced two direct-to-video sequels of the big-screen feature Darkman; and produced the two-hour pilot for the FOX series M.A.N.T.I.S.
Day Sequerra M4DDM

This diversity delay monitor is the first Day Sequerra product to incorporate the company's newly developed digital signal processing (DSP) architecture. The M4DDM DSP runs the Day Sequerra Timelock algorithm to automatically maintain alignment of the HD Radio main program signal (MPS) analog and HD-1 digital audio. Using its selective off-air tuner, the M4DDM measures the MPS analog and HD-1 digital audio diversity and generates a continuous stream of correction vectors to keep the analog and digital audio time and level aligned. These correction vectors can be processed internally by the M4DDM to delay the digital program audio or can be sent via Ethernet to an HD Radio Embedded Exporter to provide the necessary delay. Additionally, the unit has digital audio outputs for confidence monitoring and alarm outputs for loss of program audio and OFDM sidebands as well as HD Radio data and RBDS data payloads. The algorithm used in the M4DDM is based on a new digital audio correlation methodology developed jointly by Harris and Day Sequerra.
