MediaCorp Singapore to Terminate DAB Operations
Singapore - Nov 1, 2011 - The earliest adopter of DAB in South East Asia, Media Corporation of Singapore, has decided to terminate its DAB transmissions on Dec. 1, 2011. According to a statement on its website: "Back then, (in 1999) DAB was widely seen as the 'replacement technology' for FM radio; however, the effectiveness and reach of DAB has diminished over time with advances in technology which has widened the receptivity of radio through online streaming as well as mobile phone apps. Listeners now have a wide range of convenient access to radio alongside the FM services, which continue to provide excellent coverage and listenership in Singapore."
MediaCorp says listenership for DAB has stagnated, and that company resources must be used elsewhere, particularly in technology that is actually seeing growth in listenership. It also says all DAB staff will be re-deployed throughout the company.
