Grass Fire Claims KIID Towers
Sacramento, CA - Jul 15, 2009 - While a grass fire isn't normally big news, it becomes news when it affects a radio transmitter site. Such is the case for KIID-AM in Sacramento. A two-alarm grass fire scorched the ground, and took one tower down on its own. A second tower, weakened by the blaze, was felled by the station. The station's third tower is apparently still standing and undamaged.
It was hoped that the damaged second tower could be saved, but the decision was made to let it fall. Video of the tower guy wire being cut was captured by KXTV-TV.
The station was off the air for a few hours but returned at low power.
The first tower's doghouse was also claimed in the fire. A CBS news station reports that it's possible the fire started in that doghouse.

KXTV-TV had a reporter on site to capture the second tower being felled.
