FCC Extends Sirius XM Channel Leasing Condition Deadline
Washington - May 29, 2009 - The Federal Communications Commission has granted Sirius XM a time extension until June 29, 2009, for the satcaster to implement its voluntary commitment to enter into long-term leases or other agreements to provide qualified entities rights to 4 percent of the full-time audio channels on the Sirius and XM platforms. This condition was one of the points included in approving the merger of the two companies.
The merger was approved on July 25, 2008. The operational specifics of the leasing conditions have not yet been specified. On Feb. 27, 2009, the FCC issued a public notice seeking comment on the implementation details of the leasing condition and also extended the compliance deadline until May 29, 2009.
