DAB+ Adding More Digital Choices Down Under
A report in the Sidney Morning Herald says that Australian digital radio is in the process of adding more programming options for digital listeners in the five metro markets where DAB+ service is currently offered.
Some of the offerings cited in the article reflect DAB+ technology's dynamic channel management capability within a given multiplex. Examples include commercial programmer Austereo, which currently offers a specialty rock channel with alternating theme-based programming. Public broadcaster ABC is also using alternate multiplex channels to provide an additional venue for special events such as national cricket matches that can run concurrently with normally scheduled programming.
While a little more than half of all DAB+ programming is currently being offered via analog signals, some smaller community stations are also making the digital transition. Nine community broadcasters in Melbourne -- including some that are now AM only -- will soon join the multiplex there, thanks to funding from Australia's Community Broadcasting Foundation.
Applications for similar grants from 37 other community stations are currently pending in the cities of Melbourne, Adelaide, Sydney, Perth, Brisbane.
