New Vehicles from GM, Audi Will Offer Embedded Internet in Spring 2014
Mar 24, 2014 - Starting in April 2014, new car buyers will have the opportunity to get a vehicle with embedded Internet connectivity, according to MIT Technology Review. The first dashboard apps will be dumbed-down versions of familiar apps such as the Weather Channel, Pandora and Priceline. GM expects to provide just 10 apps initially, most of them mapping, news and radio services.
Bruce Hopkins, co-founder of San Diego's BT Software, is one of very few developers with an app that will be available initially in GM cars. "One of the terms GM talks a lot about is driver workload," Hopkins says. "You cannot have anything that would require drivers to have several different things they have to think about. At the end of the day, they want something that works as simple as the regular radio."
The first U.S. model with embedded Wi-fi is expected to be the 2015 Audi A3, which lists for $29,900. The data plan is expected to cost about $16 per month. GM expects to start offering vehicles with embedded connectivity (based on 4G LTE) starting in June 2014. The same article goes on to say that both Ford and Toyota expect to offer the same services soon.
Both Audi and GM are using AT&T to provide the service.
