APT Raises Money for Great Charity Challenge
Belfast, North Ireland - February 2008 - APT has raised £8,000 (nearly $11,670) for charity over the past 12 months. The money raised will be used for Oxfam's livelihood programs in Uganda and Sudan and will go toward helping people support themselves and build their own way out of poverty.
APT presented the money to Oxfam (a confederation of 13 organizations working together with more than 3,000 partners in more than 100 countries to find lasting solutions to poverty and injustice) Fundraising Executive Dearbhla McGrath last week at its Belfast offices. Dearbhla was delighted with the donation and said, "Oxfam will use £4,000 (about $5,835) of APT's £8,000 donation to continue to support those caught up in the crisis in Darfur, Sudan. Now entering its fifth year, the Darfur crisis continues to be one of the world's largest concentrations of human suffering. A massive 2.5 million people - more than one in three Darfurians - have been forced from their homes by the violence."
"Over 2 million of them are now sheltering in camps for Internally Displaced People inside Darfur and the money APT has raised will help Oxfam continue to support those living there. Our programmes in the camps are designed not only to keep people healthy and reduce disease, but also to help people maintain their basic human dignity."
"The other £4000 will be used for Oxfam's Support a Woman in Business in Uganda. This project involves giving women's groups a loan to set up their own business, giving them a means to support themselves and build their way out of poverty. Projects like these have been a solution and a relief from many challenges suffered by women, girls and the whole community."
