BMW UK Makes DAB Radios Standard Across 2013 Product Line
London - Nov 15, 2012 - BMW UK announced that all new BMW models for the UK will have DAB radios as standard equipment across the entire range from January 2013 onwards. This follows the decision of the BMW Group to fit new Minis with digital radio as standard from September 2010.
Leading UK car companies Ford, Vauxhall and VW have already announced plans to accelerate their transition to providing digital radio as standard in new models. According to SMMT and CAP latest figures, 26 percent of all new cars had digital radio as standard in September 2012 and Ford of Britain confirmed that more then 50 percent of its new UK cars now came with digital radio as standard.
The BMW announcement follows the recent Drive 2 Digital Conference, during which the Minister for Culture, Communications and Creative Industries, Ed Vaizey, said that the U.K. government plans to make a radio switchover announcement in 2013 and that the BBC is actively building DAB coverage out towards 97 percent.
The CEO of Digital Radio UK, Ford Ennals, welcomed the BMW announcement, saying "As we head toward the radio switchover, I'm pleased that BMW UK is launching DAB digital radios in all [its] new models - this is a tipping point in the transition to having digital radio in all new cars. During the countdown to the 2013 government switchover announcement broadcasters are committed to communicating to listeners that they can get digital radio in their car and encouraging them to 'spread the love.'"
